About the World Movement for Democracy

Founded in 1999, the World Movement for Democracy is a community of action comprised of individuals and organizations working together to catalyze political and public support for democracy around the world. Partnering with other organizations, we build solidarity among democracy advocates against immediate threats while providing sustained support in their long-haul journey of democracy building.

To facilitate community and resource building, we facilitate networking among democracy supporters, convenings, discussions, and workshops on democracy in different regions of the world. We actively empower democracy movements to engage in cross-regional solidarity, as well as share knowledge and strategies with one another.

Furthermore, to meet the challenges and opportunities of the current environment, the World Movement is focusing on defending civic space, leveraging digital technologies for democracy, strengthening democratic institutions, and cultivating the next generations of democracy leaders. We are pursuing these themes through various initiatives, such as the Civic Space Initiatives, the Set Them Free Campaign, the What’s Next Campaign, and the Crossover Initiative.

The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) serves as the World Movement Secretariat and is the principal organizer of the Global Assembly.
